Image
LISSA is proud to announce the new Mildly Attractive Men of SLIS Calendar 2012: Masterpieces   It's that time of year again. LISSA’s international sensation, the Mildly Attractive Men of SLIS Calendar is in its fifth year. Last year we rocked you all year ‘round with our cleverly shot Hot Covers , an ode to famous album covers. The calendar featured your favorite students from the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina. This year, the Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA) has aimed high with a new 12 months of artistic delight! With Master Pieces we aim to please with 12 photographs (plus 1 cover) inspired by works of art by masters through the ages! "Wow, this calendar offers 12 months (plus 1 cover) of mildly attractive librarians?" YES! But wait, there's more! Do you find yourself wondering when the next library-related state conference or national conference begins? We’ve thoug...

Library of Human Imagination

I just wanted to pass along this TedTalks (which I happen to be addicted to!) from Jay Walker , speaking about the Library of Human Imagination. He talks about some different items in the museum (some space stuff, a big bible, you know) and then shows photos of the inside of the museum.... and wow! This is definitely something worth watching... and it is not that long anyways! -Meredith

September Colloquium

If you missed the September colloquium, then you missed an awesome opportunity to hear techniques for getting your (future) archive or library catalog extra internet attention. In the past few years, Brian Cuthrell has been working to bring more attention to USC's awesome South Caroliniana library. Perhaps his biggest suggestion is to piggy-back on a larger/related collection. He showed examples from the South Caroliniana catalog of links to fellow academic archives (Duke University) and local resources (Lowcountry Digital Library). Brian explained how these links create a greater web experience for patrons and… it just makes logical sense to create a link between two university catalogs if each has a document related to a specific South Carolina army base, for example. I personally think this also means that archiving is just one big happy family! :) Brian also made the following practical suggestions when cataloguing digital artifacts: *Identify as much about the item as pos...

LISSA Fall 2011!!!

Ah the start of the school year... classes are beginning to pick up... the cool breeze is visiting us every so often. This means that a new academic year is up and running... and LISSA is too! We have a lot of exciting things happening this year. I believe that I can speak for all the officers when I say- We want LISSA to provide fun opportunities to enrich your LIS program! We are adding lots of volunteering days as well as professional development events. Anywho, here is what we discussed in the first meeting.... time to start getting involved: VOLUNTEERING There is a great volunteer opportunity to work with the Cure4Kids website. Dorothy Mays, from St. Jude's hospital, needs people to classify seminars. Dorothy is calling for volunteers to help with her classification project of the special topic seminars on the Cure4Kids website. Not only will you be gaining classification experience, you will also be helping out a very good organization! We will send out a follow...

LISSA Website Update

The LISSA webpage has been dead for the last few months. A busy fall semester gave way to a busy spring and the LISSA website fell into disuse. The page is sporting a different take on a new logo previously designed by the talented John Quirk (who is also a recent graduate). The officer directory has also been updated for the 2011-2012 school year. We will be changing things all summer and semester long, so keep checking back for updates here . If you have any questions, comments, or input please contact us at slis_lissa@yahoo.com -Andrew

Ace that Interview! Webinar

Tonight I attended a great presentation titled "Ace that Interview!" presented by the Public Library Section of SCLA and LISSA. We heard expert advice on preparing for an interview from Caroline Hipp (RCPL, Extension Services Manager), Roberta Bibbins (Orangeburg County Library, Director), and Jennifer Wishart (RCPL, Job Readiness Trainer). We had a few technical difficulties at the beginning of the session in which our internet connection was lost and the session re-started. Therefore, the recording starts a few minutes into the presentation, but don't worry the majority is included. Have a listen and hopefully learn some new things as you prepare for your job search. http://breeze.sc.edu/p94144442/

Weekend Activities

It's only Wednesday but I'm already thinking about the weekend.  Fortunately there are a lot of great things to look forward to whether you're here in Columbia or part of a cohort. Friday February 18th Here in Columbia we will be having a potluck in the student lounge in the basement of Davis College at 6pm. If you haven't yet given your RSVP (which you should have by now!) email Kelly to let her know that you're attending and what you're bringing. I'd also recommend bringing some of your Tupperware so that you can bring home a variety of the leftovers.  I mean c'mon, one person isn't going to want to take ALL of their brownies home, right? Our Charleston Cohort is also having a food-related activity as they meet on Friday the 18th at Taco Boy at 7pm.  Lisa will be organizing the event so you can ask for her table if you make it there. Saturday February 19th Jason Broughton from the State Library will be hosting a resume workshop in Davis.  F...
