Author Jacqueline Woodson will be in Columbia Friday, Nov. 30, 2007

Award winning author Jacqueline Woodson will be visiting Columbia on Friday, November 30, 2007. Her visit is sponsored by the University of South Carolina’s Department of English, the South Carolina Center for Children’s Books and Literacy, the University Libraries, and the Thomas Cooper Society.

Ms. Woodson is the author of over 40 books for children and teens including the award winners: Locomotion, Coming on Home Soon, Hush, The Other Side, and Miracle’s Boys. To learn more about her, see her website

Ms. Woodson will address Columbia metro area middle and high school students at 10 a.m. in the Creighton Middle School Auditorium.

At 2:30 p.m., she will meet with a group of twenty five writers and students of creative writing in the Graniteville Room of the Thomas Cooper Library. Advance registration is required. To register call: 777-8154 or email tclrarebooks@sc.edu

A reception and book signing sponsored by the Thomas Cooper Society will follow Ms. Woodson’s informal writers’ workshop at 4:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public and guests will have the opportunity to purchase books and have them signed.

ERMD Student Award

The ERMD Student Award recognizes a student who is especially interested in pursuing a career as an information professional dealing with environment and resource management issues. The award is $500.00, plus a $750 reimbursement award if the student comes to the SLA annual meeting in New Orleans. The student must be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program. This award is meant to promote both current and future involvement in and commitment to the library and information science profession prior to, during, and after the master's program. To be considered for the award, a student must be an SLA member and write a 300-500 word essay describing his or her interest in the issues facing information professionals in the environment and natural resources fields. Essays should be labeled with the student's name, contact information, and educational institution. Deadline for receiving submissions is March 15, 2010.
