The District of Columbia Area Health Sciences Libraries is offering a stipend for one graduate library/information studies school student to attend the MLA 2010 conference in Washington, DC May 21-26, 2010. The stipend will cover the full conference registration fee at the MLA student rate ($195) plus the MLA student membership fee ($40) for 2010 and a one-year membership in DCAHSL. Transportation, meals and other expenses are the responsibility of the student. Applications due by April 23, 2010 The Paul Evan Peters Fellowship was established to honor and perpetuate the memory of CNI's founding executive director. The fellowship is awarded every two years to a student pursuing graduate studies in librarianship, the information sciences, or a closely related field, who demonstrates intellectual and personal qualities consistent with those of Paul Evan Peters, including: Commitment to use of digital information and advanced technology to enhance scholarship, intellectual productivity and public life; Interest in the civic responsibilities of information professionals and a commitment to democratic values; Positive and creative approach to overcoming personal, technological, and bureaucratic challenges, and Humor, vision, humanity, and imagination. The fellowship is in the amount of $5000 per year, to be awarded two consecutive years to a student in a graduate program. ...

The LISSA 10k Run/Walk is coming up on Saturday, March 20th at 2PM and we need everyone's help! Not only do all submissions go towards the ALA Haiti relief fund (check out this link to learn more on this great effort to rebuild libraries in Haiti http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/iro/iroactivities/haitirelieffund.cfm ) but also, the tradition of the president having to do humiliating things still stands ! If we earn $250, SLIS President Chess Schmidt will do the 10k with shaved legs. If we earn $500, he will shave his head (he has NEVER shaved his head before). If we earn $750, he will shave his beard (4 months in the making that he grew specifically for the Columbia Beard and Mustache Club). The pledge form is attached and ready for you to collect money! The 10k spans the riverwalk in Columbia, SC (or can be held at a comparable location anywhere!) from River Front Park in downtown Columbia to Broad River Road. The Robert V. Williams Graduate Student Research Award encourages graduate students in the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) to do research in the field of Library and Information Science. All currently enrolled students and previous semester graduates are eligible for the award. Papers submitted may use any type of research methodology but must be research oriented. Submissions may come directly from faculty or students. Certificates will be awarded to the winter(s) of the award at Graduate Student Day with monetary award(s) of $100. Deadline for receipt of the submitted papers is March 20, 2010. Please submit to delton@mailbox.sc.edu.

The William Davis Melton Graduate Assistantship at the University of South Carolina Archives is available beginning May 2010 for a Library, Public History, or History graduate student. (Student must be enrolled in summer session to be hired during summer. Otherwise position will start with fall semester). The position offers the opportunity to learn a wide variety of archival skills, including reference, processing of collections, digitization of collection materials, and assisting in the research and production of exhibits relating to University and South Carolina history. Must be able to lift boxes weighing 40 lbs and work 10 to 20 hours per week (20 is preferred). Salary is $9.50 per hour.
