Mildly Attractive Men of SLIS 2014 Calendars Now Available

You probably haven’t even bothered to notice, but mildly attractive men are just about everywhere. It’s true. They’re shambling down the cereal aisle at the corner grocer. They’re fumbling around in their pockets for grubby quarters at the local Laundromat. Your sister knows a mildly attractive man and she likes him a lot, she really does, but it’s more like as a brother. Besides, she’s not at a point in her life where she’s looking for that sort of thing with, well, anyone really. Right now in America, a mildly attractive man is in his kitchen eating bread over the sink. One side is scarcely toasted – the other, which was charred to a crisp, is slathered in expired jam. Nobody should have to live like this. Someone needs to do something. Someone has. Again. The heroic males of the School of Library and Information Science have stood against the injustices foisted upon ineligible bachelors for seven consecutive years through the production of their Mildly Attractive Men of SL...

University of South Carolina Tours Recap

Hi everyone, LISSA is right in the middle of our September tours. Last Friday, our members were able to tour the Thomas Cooper and Ernest Hollings Libraries. The Thomas Cooper is undoubtedly familiar to all of our students, but we did get a quick look behind the scenes. Our newer members were also given a rundown of some of the special features and privileges that they may not have been aware of. The tour of Ernest Hollings took us behind the scenes of the South Carolina Political Collection, Digital Collection and Rare Books. Members were treated to memorabilia from South Carolina’s political movers and shakers and rare books and materials ranging from John J. Audubon paintings to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s personal ledger. Monday’s tours were equally exciting – at the South Caroliniana our members were treated to information that covered the scope of the library’s collection, its policies and its history. Some of the storied history of USC’s campus, particularly the Horseshoe, wa...

It's that time of year again! Time to order textbooks, sharpen pencils, and get ready for the school year ahead. This past Saturday SLIS held its fall orientation for all the new students getting ready to embark on the adventure of getting their MLIS degree. LISSA had the opportunity to present and talk about all the great events we have coming up this semester. After orientation we had our post-orientation social at Carolina Ale House in the Vista and the turn out was great! We are so excited to welcome so many new and wonderful members. Here is a picture of our great group: As for upcoming events, we have our first LISSA member meeting of the semester Monday September 9th at 5:30 in Davis 112. If you are unable to make it we will be streaming it live. Here's to a great semester!

Cross-Posting: Part-time job for a SLIS student!

Hey everyone, I just received a notice of a part-time job opening at the Orangeburg County Library for a Library Technical Assistant II/Circulation P/T, and since LISSA is cultivating an ongoing relationship with the OCL I wanted to cross-post the job here.  Information about the position can be viewed here ; it sounds like a great opportunity for a Columbia or Charleston area SLIS student to get some work experience in a public library before graduation.  Think how much this can boost your resume/CV!  Hopefully we can get a SLIS student in this position...take a look!  Ann Merryman LISSA president, 2012-2013

It might be summer, but LISSA hasn't wasted any time getting a jump on the year.  We've gained 11 new members following this summer's orientation, and after a fun social event in early June, we decided we needed to put this great group of librarians to work!  After some discussion with one of LISSA's recent grads and new librarians, we came up with a great plan:  weeding the fiction and non-fiction collections at the Orangeburg County Library in Orangeburg, SC.  On Saturday, July 28th a group of 13 LISSA members descended on the OCL from all over the state; three members from Charleston SC (including one alumni), a member from Savannah GA, one from Florence SC, and eight more from Columbia (including two more alumni!).  We got a tour of the library from LISSA alum and OCL Adult Services Librarian Anna Z., and an overview of what we would be working on that day. The workload was a big one:  weeding fiction and shifting part of the collection off the back...
