ERMD Student Award

The ERMD Student Award recognizes a student who is especially interested in pursuing a career as an information professional dealing with environment and resource management issues. A $1,000 award will be given to a student enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program. This award is meant to promote both current and future involvement in and commitment to the library and information science profession prior to, during, and after the master's program. To be considered for the award, a student must be an SLA member and write a 300-500 word essay describing his or her interest in the issues facing information professionals in the environment and natural resources fields. Essays should be labeled with the student's name, contact information, and educational institution. Deadline for receiving submissions is February 29, 2008. Student Book Collecting Contest Announcement

Call for Entries Thomas Cooper Library Student Book Collecting Award, 2008 Submission deadline: March 18, 2008. Entries are invited from students currently enrolled at the University of South Carolina for the Thomas Cooper Library Student Book Collecting Award, carrying a first prize of $250. This award was initiated by the Thomas Cooper Society in 1993, with sponsorship from the Columbia-based publishing house of Bruccoli Clark Layman, to encourage beginning book collectors. Friday Hockey Night in Atlanta!

Hello all, I have talked to a couple of you about seeing a real NHL game down in Atlanta . This Friday at 7:30 PM, the Buffalo Sabres are playing the Atlanta Thrashers in what should be a really good game. Tickets are 10 bucks and 7 to park. Patrick has confirmed that we can crash at his apartment, but he needs to know how many people are coming down. If you are still interested in this, please e-mail me immediately. We need to discuss travel times and plans and arrangements. Tentative time for leaving on Friday will be 3 PM and staying the night, coming back to Columbia sometime Saturday. Tuesday, March 11 from 4pm-7pm for bag stuffing and general running around/helping at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center to prepare for conference, which starts the next day. Public Library Appreciation Day - Jan 31 - Volunteers Needed

Greetings, SLIS students! In years past, USC library students have assisted the SC Association of Public Library Adminstrators in our lobbying efforts at our annual SC Library Legislative Days. As a result of everyone working very hard, state aid for public libraries is finally back above the level that it was when the state sustained repeated budget cuts in the 90's. The help we received from volunteers helped make that possible, and we thank you for your support. This year we are doing something a little bit different. We think it will be fun and exciting, and we need volunteers once again. We will be bringing public library supporters to the State House on Thursday, January 31st for the first ever Public Library Appreciation Day (PLAD). Graduate Assistantship

The School of Library and Information Science is seeking three graduate students who are interested in a Graduate Assistantship for the Spring 2008 semester. Two positions are available with a faculty member, and one position is available in a campus office. The faculty assignments requires 10 hours of work per week, and the office assignment requires 20 hours of work per week. Student assistants with 10 hour assistantship earn a stipend of $1500 per semester and a $1500 tuition supplement; student assistants with a 20 hour assistantship earn a stipend of $3000 per semester and a $1500 tuition supplement. [Posted on behalf of Linda Martin] Hi Everybody, I'm sending this out to you all in hopes that you might know of someone who is willing and able to work around 20 hours per week ($10 per hour) to assist with maintaining the law library at Nelson Mullins. The job entails updating looseleaf materials, filing pocket parts and shelving. The hours are very flexible, requiring some during 8 am - 6 pm for direction from the library staff.
