Program Orientation Jan 12

Hello New SLIS Students,

We are looking forward to meeting you on Saturday, January 12 on the

Columbia Campus for the School of Library and Information Science

Orientation.

Earlier this month notices about the Orientation were mailed to all new

students.

This meeting is MANDATORY for incoming students; if you have a

personal reason

for not attending, such as family emergency, etc. please contact the

Student Services

Office at 1-800-304-3153, or 1-803-777-3887, or by email at

carolbwilliams@sc.edu

or lindseynewman@sc.edu.

We will begin at 10:00 am in Room 107 at Currell College. Parking can

be found at meters on

nearby streets as well as in the lower level of the Pendleton Street

Garage. Currell College is

located on Greene Street, across from the Russell House student Center

and next to Davis College

on Greene Street. If you want to get online driving directions, just

enter our address (Davis College)

at 1501 Greene Street for the destination address. You can also go to

the USC campus map web site at http://www.sc.edu/uscmap to locate

Currell College.

We will begin at 10:00 am when you will be welcomed and introduced to

SLIS faculty, staff, and other guests. A brief overview and

information

session will conclude at 10:45 am with a morning break. We will

continue

the information portion untiil lunch, which will be served at Davis

College at 12:30 - 1:45 pm. Students will have time to go to the Barnes

and Noble Book store at Russell House in the afternoon portion of

Orientation.

ERMD Student Award

The ERMD Student Award recognizes a student who is especially interested in pursuing a career as an information professional dealing with environment and resource management issues. The award is $500.00, plus a $750 reimbursement award if the student comes to the SLA annual meeting in New Orleans. The student must be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program. This award is meant to promote both current and future involvement in and commitment to the library and information science profession prior to, during, and after the master's program. To be considered for the award, a student must be an SLA member and write a 300-500 word essay describing his or her interest in the issues facing information professionals in the environment and natural resources fields. Essays should be labeled with the student's name, contact information, and educational institution. Deadline for receiving submissions is March 15, 2010.
