FoSCL Independent Study and Internship

The Friends of South Carolina Libraries (FoSCL) would like to work with two students who are interested in learning more about Friend’s Groups and the contributions they make to public libraries.

The first project is an independent study that will focus on the activities of other local and state friends groups and result in a research paper that considers these groups’ dynamics and activities. This project could be completed by either a distance or Columbia based student. The second opportunity is an internship in which a student will work on various FoSCL projects, including strategic planning, event planning, and program development. This opportunity would work best for a Columbia based student. It might also work well for a student in the Charleston area, where the current FoSCL president lives. Dr. Jennifer Arns will be the faculty sponsor in both cases. Please contact her if you are interested in one of these opportunities.

ERMD Student Award

The ERMD Student Award recognizes a student who is especially interested in pursuing a career as an information professional dealing with environment and resource management issues. The award is $500.00, plus a $750 reimbursement award if the student comes to the SLA annual meeting in New Orleans. The student must be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program. This award is meant to promote both current and future involvement in and commitment to the library and information science profession prior to, during, and after the master's program. To be considered for the award, a student must be an SLA member and write a 300-500 word essay describing his or her interest in the issues facing information professionals in the environment and natural resources fields. Essays should be labeled with the student's name, contact information, and educational institution. Deadline for receiving submissions is March 15, 2010.
