Satisfy Your Curiosity for nature at McKissick Museum. Join the Museum

staff this Thursday, Nov. 8th, from 5:30 PM * 7:30 PM. There is an

exhibit reception honoring “Natural Curiosity,” a long-term exhibition

on USC’s Natural Science Collection, as well as “A Sense of

Wonder,” a nature and science-based exhibition of paintings by Pam Bowers.

Refreshments and special exhibit tours will be available.

The University of Scout Carolina has a long and storied history of

assembling mineral, plant, fossil and animal specimen collections. From the

University’s beginning, faculty has used these collections for

teaching and research. While many of these collections are no longer used in

the classroom, they are an unmatched resource for understanding the

history of science and the fascination with nature.

Pam Bowers, our faculty member in the USC Art Department, understands

the fascination with nature. Utilizing her skills as a painter and

photographer,Bowers explores the relationship between imagination and fact

to express her sense of wonder with the natural world. She uses a

mixture of techniques including painting, digital painting, and cyanotypes

to fully explore the natural world through science. Bowers offers a

unique glimpse into a visionary world of scientific study and curiosity.

ERMD Student Award

The ERMD Student Award recognizes a student who is especially interested in pursuing a career as an information professional dealing with environment and resource management issues. The award is $500.00, plus a $750 reimbursement award if the student comes to the SLA annual meeting in New Orleans. The student must be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program. This award is meant to promote both current and future involvement in and commitment to the library and information science profession prior to, during, and after the master's program. To be considered for the award, a student must be an SLA member and write a 300-500 word essay describing his or her interest in the issues facing information professionals in the environment and natural resources fields. Essays should be labeled with the student's name, contact information, and educational institution. Deadline for receiving submissions is March 15, 2010.
